Introduction
Variants are names actually used by the individuals concerned over several generations, whereas ‘deviants’ are spellings used by others when recording or transcribing the name.
Variants of the name GRAY
The main variant is GREY with its associated DE GREY and LE GREY, though early records also mention Croy, Groy and Graie.
Some families change between the variants – some only being one for a generation before reverting to the other.
Part of the work will be to see if, and when, any of these variants die out.
