How The Study Works

This section explains how the Gray One-Name Study is conducted —
the tools used, the methodology applied, and the thinking behind the
decisions made. It is intended both for fellow researchers curious
about the study’s approach, and for anyone who wants to understand
how the results published on this site have been arrived at.

What’s in this section

  • Approach to the Gray ONS — the overall approach to the study: sources used, scope, decisions made, and the honest challenges of researching a name as widespread as Gray and Grey.
  • Research Tools — the software used to record, manage, analyse and publish the study’s data, including The Master Genealogist (TMG), SecondSite, TMG2GEDCOM and FTAnalyzer.

Fellow researchers: if you have questions about the
methodology or tools used in this study, or would like to discuss
approaches to your own One-Name Study, I would be glad to hear from
you. Get in touch →
