The Essex Regiment., yst s of the late James Gray, by his wife Elizabeth; b. Bradford, co. York, 8 June 1882; educ Barkxrad Council School there; was a Yorkshire Representative of Messrs. Redfern's, Ltd., Rubber Heel Manufacturers; joined the Essex Regt. 10 Jan. 1917; served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in Palestine and Egypt from 31 May and died at Kantarah, Egypt, 4 Dec. 1917 of wounds received in action at Jaifa on 29 Nov. Buried in the military cemetery there. Second Lieut. Lockwood wrote: "He was wonderfully brave and splendid all through the severe fighting in November and I miss him very much”. He m. at Southend Wesleyan church 26 May 1912 Hannah (27 Woodhall Terrace, Thornbury, Bradford), dau of John Denby and had a dau, Edna, b. 28 Sept. 1914.
