Research Notes

  • Frederick George Gray A TOWN mayor has retired from politics amid rumours of a rift in his group. Fred Gray, who became mayor last year, decided to resign on Tuesday after serving on the council for nine years. Born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1925, Mr Gray was one of six children who grew up in a poverty-stricken family background. He started work as an apprentice at a machine tool factory in Bolton. He worked in engineering throughout his life, retiring as head of engineering firm Babcock International. Mr Gray said, 'I think now, at the age of 79, it's time to go. There are lots of younger people that need to be introduced into council work. 'The older people should make way for them to have this opportunity to do something for the people of Polegate.' He acted as chairman of the policy and finance committee for two years, which kept a check on the council's books and yearly budget. He also served on planning and other sub-committees. He became town mayor last year after the town council and Wealden local elections. His predecessor was Cllr Ivy Scarborough, who was mayor for two years. Mr Gray added, 'I found being on Polegate Town Council a great help to me. 'The whole concept of Polegate has changed in nine years, from being a little village to something that we feel is a force to be reckoned with.' The former mayor said his mother encouraged him and his siblings to put 100 per cent into their lives to better themselves. 'To start with nothing and end up becoming mayor of a town is something for others to aim for.' He refuted rumours that there was a rift within Polegate Residents' Association. Mr Gray said, 'As in all parties there are differences of opinion. We are not a political party but an association. 'No group is completely in tune with everything that is agreed.'
