  • He was a teacher having joined the Modern Language Department at Taunton school teaching Modern Languages. He taught until retiring in 1973 when he was head of the department. He was remembered fondly by pupils and staff alike. One pupil says: "four young lads set out from the Sholing area of Southampton, going on the great adventure which was Taunton's Grammar School. Imagine our surprise when we found out we were all to be in Form 1A2. We had to select a foreign language to learn, and as a group, did not much fancy French or Spanish, did not like the teachers, so all decided to take German with this dour looking fellow. Thus began a beautiful friendship, as all four of us grew to idolise your Dad, and I think he had a soft spot for us. He was appointed as our form master in our second year, and third year as well. I also learnt about respect from your Dad. We always wrote out a copy of a school report at the end of term, to take home to parents, and in my form master's report, your Dad's, he wrote that I was an integral part of the class, but allowed my enthusiasm to get the better of me, and my attitude was sometimes bordering on the down right rude. Shock horror. I thought about it for a minute, then went to your Dad at the front of the class, and said "so Sorry" He just said "OK, Forgiven." I learnt respect then. in 1946 at Taunton School, The Avenue, Southampton, Hampshire, England, .
