DNA Matches

Analysing DNA Matches

Ancestry and other testing companies identify potential relatives — “cousin matches” — based on the amount of shared DNA. The approach taken in this study varies depending on the closeness of the match.

For close matches (up to second cousin), the priority is to trace the connection back to either the maternal or paternal line using documentary evidence.

For more distant matches (third and fourth cousins), the approach is:

  1. Check whether the match has a published family tree
  2. If so, verify that tree against online documentary sources
  3. Attempt to connect their tree to my own

Matches that have been successfully researched are recorded in the SecondSite database and linked below.
