  • James Gray was the subject of an obituary: "Private James Gray, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Information has been received that Private James Gray, Royal Scots Fusiliers, was killed in action on August 12th. He had been wounded through the nose early inJuly and after a month in hospital, rejoined his regiment on August 6th. Private Gray, who was the youngest son of the late Mr William Gray, carpenter, 120 Church Street, Whitby married the third daughter of Mr ... Eglon, The Pier Whitby. (He lived in) West Hartlepool where he was employed in the shipyard, and he leaves his wife and six children. In his younger days Private Gray was very successful as a member of the Whitby Friendship Rowing Club at the regatta on the North-East ... his older brother, Mr William Gray... the popular stroke
    of the ... known as "the carpenter crew."9
