Ian Helstrip Baker was born 26 Nov, 1927, the son of Henry Hubert Baker, by his wife Mary Clare Coles, and was educated at St Peter's School, York,; St Edmund Hall, Oxford, and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He married in 1956, Susan Anne (Sally), daughter of Major Henry Osmond Lock, by whom he had 2 sons, Edward and Robert, and 1 daughter, Joanna. He was predeceased by his son, Edward.
