Research Notes

  • George Camichel George Camichel enlisted in the British Army on 9th March 1917 at the age of 17 years 7 months. He was grade A4. He was Roman Catholic and his occupation is given as Electric Trolley Driver. He joined the Army at Aldershot on the 5th September 1917, Regimental Number 26791 and was posted to the 97th Res Bn on the 7th September. During his time with the battalion his conduct sheet records 3 days CB for an untidy bed-cot and 5 days CB for taking two measures of vegetables when mess orderly. On the 22nd January 1918 he was transferred to the Regular Bn Royal Sussex Regt BEF France and on the 5th April to the Field Bn. On the 6th July 1918 he was granted compassionate leave (his father had died) until the 19thJuly, subsequently extended to the 24th July by the War Office for urgent family affairs. He returned to the 12th East Surrey Regt and on the 5th October 1918 received a gun shot wound in the foot while in action. He was shipped immediately to the Cambridge Hospital Aldershot where he stayed until 2nd November 1918. From the 3rd November to the 12th November he was on furlough at 29 Peabody Buildings, Block 3, Grosvenor Road, Victoria, London SW1 (where presumably his mother and brothers had found accommodation after returning from Bath) and afterwards returned to duty with the 3rd Bn East Surrey Regt. He was discharged from the Army on the 24th January 1919 at Bridge of Allen

    These records are in the First World War Soldier's Documents (WO 363) C155 Roe 6 Drawer 1 - 64 at the PRO Kew. He was the only soldier in the British Army with the name of Camichel.1
